Professor Nieman has experience in various areas of civil legal practice, with the majority of her legal career focused on providing civil legal services to low-income, underrepresented populations through her work at preeminent legal services organizations.  She served as Managing Attorney with the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, and as Pro Bono Program Manager and Staff Attorney with the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc.  During her tenure at both nonprofit legal service organizations, Nieman supervised the San Diego Superior Court legal clinics, with matters ranging from civil restraining orders, domestic violence restraining orders and landlord-tenant disputes.  While at the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc., Nieman began a new program assisting non-profits in their efforts to obtain tax exemption.  During the course of her career, Nieman also took time to start her own legal practice, where she specialized in landlord-tenant issues, bankruptcy, family law, small business contractual disputes. Immediately before joining the TJSL faculty, Nieman served as Assistant Director of Legal Services at the University of California-San Diego.
