Mark Cumba began his legal career as a Cook County State’s Attorney in Chicago where he prosecuted cases in the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau, Juvenile Justice Bureau, Narcotics Prosecutions Bureau and Public Interest Bureau. He then joined various AV-rated law firms in Chicago and San Diego as a civil litigator where he handled product liability claims defending automobile, motorcycle, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers; professional liability matters defending attorneys in legal malpractice claims; and personal injury matters ranging from slip and falls to automobile accidents.
After several years litigating civil cases, Mr. Cumba returned to public service joining the California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General. As a Deputy Attorney General, he is assigned to the Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse where he represents the State of California in investigating and prosecuting companies and individuals for illegally abusing the Medicare/Medi-Cal programs as well as residential care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, caregivers and other individuals for abusing or neglecting California's elderly and dependent adult citizens.
While in law school, Mr. Cumba was a member of the national trial team reaching the Final Four in the NITA Tournament of Champions and winning the Regional Championship of the ABA/ACTL/TYLA National Trial Competition. He was the recipient of the CALI Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy 1, Trial Advocacy 2 and Advanced Legal Research, and was later a co-instructor for the Litigation Technology course, which equipped students with the skills necessary for leveraging computer technology in the courtroom. As an adjunct faculty member at TJSL, Mr. Cumba is a coach for the National Trial Team.
Mr. Cumba is an appointed member of the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation where he assists the governor in the judicial selection process. He was the recipient of the Chicago-Kent College of Law Young Alumni Award in 2008, was selected as a San Diego County Top Attorney finalist in the category of Municipal & Government Attorneys, and was the recipient of the Attorney General Award for Prosecution in 2015.
