Thomas Jefferson School of Law Professor Richard Winchester has been elected to
the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI). He was nominated for membership because of his work on employment tax policy, including social security taxes.

“Admission into the National Academy of Social Insurance validates the work I have been doing on social security tax policy and the influence it has had in shaping legislation,” says Professor Winchester. “Because the organization includes the nation’s most prominent figures in the field of social security, I now hope to be in a better position to work with other tax professionals and policy makers to impact the direction and shape of future legislation.”

A description of the organization from its website:

The National Academy of Social Insurance is a non-profit, non-partisan organization made up of the nation's leading experts on social insurance. Its mission is to promote understanding of how social insurance contributes to economic security and a vibrant economy.
Social insurance encompasses broad-based systems for insuring workers and their families against economic insecurity caused by loss of income from work and the cost of health care. NASI's scope covers social insurance such as Social Security; Medicare; workers' compensation; and unemployment insurance, related public assistance, and private employee benefits.

NASI convenes steering committees and study panels that are charged with conducting research, issuing findings, and, in some cases, reaching recommendations based on their analysis. Members of these groups are selected for their recognized expertise and with due consideration for the balance of disciplines and perspectives appropriate to the project.

Election to membership in the National Academy of Social Insurance is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a social insurance professional. Academy membership recognizes those who have made distinguished and continuing achievements in the field.
